What the lockout is doing
Viking’s VGSC306 self-clean gas range lights its oven burners by spark, and a flame sensor confirms each light. With no flame sensed, the control shuts the gas, purges and tries again: three attempts and one recycle, per the module specification.
Then it locks out: no gas, no spark. The cycle light can stay lit because the thermostat still wants heat, and only turning bake or broil off and back on clears it. The manual pairs this fault with two technician adjustments, the igniter’s position and the burner’s air shutter.
A high-limit switch on the clean-lock bracket, opening near 275°F, resets only when power to the range is interrupted; hence step 3. Glow-bar ovens have no ignition lockout at all.
Stop and call if
- It locks out again after a reset, or on bake after bake.
- Clicking carries on with no flame at all.
- You notice a gas smell: step outside, then call the gas utility or 911.
- The burner lights late with a thump or a puff of flame.

Is it safe to keep resetting the lockout?
Once is fine; that is how Viking's manual clears it. Repeating it only reruns the failed cycle, and each failed trial opens the gas valve for up to ten seconds without flame. If it locks out twice, leave it off and call Viking Repair Redmond on (425) 585-2373.
Can a power cut make the oven refuse to light?
Briefly. When power returns, Viking's VGSC306 manual allows 30 to 60 seconds for the ignition electronics to reset before any spark. Wait a minute, then set bake again. If it still will not light after that and one breaker reset, treat it as a fault and book a visit.
