What a patchy glow means
A bake element is a coil of resistance wire packed in insulating powder inside a metal tube. Current heats the coil along its whole length, so a healthy element reddens evenly across its loops.
Where the wire or its packing breaks down, that stretch runs darker or brighter than the rest, heat spreads unevenly, and a damaged tube can split and arc.
When bake fails outright, Viking’s electric wall oven manual looks at the element, its wiring and the control relay; only the element shows through the glass.
Stop and call if
- It sparks, flashes, or shows a split or blister: turn the oven off and keep it off.
- The breaker trips whenever bake runs.
- Scorch marks appear on the oven floor or the back wall around the element's ends.

Can I keep baking with an element that glows in patches?
