Check, in this order

  1. Make sure a convection mode is selected; plain bake and broil leave the fan still.

Heat without the fan

The fan makes no heat of its own; it spreads what the burner or elements produce. On Viking’s VSOE and VDOE wall ovens it sits behind a cover in the rear wall, evening out hot and cold spots in the convection modes.

The VGSC306 gas range powers its fan only in convection bake and convection broil. For “no convection, bake normal”, its service manual lists two causes: a selector-switch contact, or an open winding in the fan motor.

Both sit behind the fan cover or the panels, so the owner’s part ends at the mode checks. This fan is also separate from the cooling fan that ventilates the controls.

Stop and call if

  • You hear a hum from the back of the oven but the fan does not turn.
  • A burning or hot-wiring smell starts when a convection mode comes on.
  • The fan rattles or scrapes, or stops partway through a bake.

Can I keep baking while the convection fan is out?

Yes, on plain bake. The burner or elements still heat the oven; only the air movement is missing. Expect patchier browning and longer times on convection recipes, especially with several racks loaded. Book the repair rather than adjusting recipes around it for months.

Is some noise normal when the convection fan runs?
