What the fan is for

The cooling fan ventilates the controls, wiring and door lock; the convection fan inside the cavity is a separate part. On Viking’s VGSC306 self-clean gas range it runs through every clean to cool the lock motor.

Its thermal switch closes near 230°F and opens below about 203°F, so a fan that never stops on a cold oven points at that switch.

Viking’s RVSOE330 and RVDOE330 guide also asks for the vents above and below the doors to be kept clear.

Stop and call if

  • The fan grinds, scrapes or rattles, or stays silent while the oven is working.

Is it normal for a Viking oven fan to keep running after I switch off?

Often, yes. The VGSC306 gas range's service manual expects its cooling fan to keep going for several minutes after a self-clean, until a thermal switch senses the heat has dropped. How long depends on how hot the oven got. A fan running on a cold oven is not normal.

Can I keep cooking while the cooling fan sounds rough?
