With the oven cold, close the door on a strip of paper; it should grip all round.

What keeps the lamp lit
On the Viking ranges whose service manuals describe it, the oven lamp follows the thermostat: lit while the oven calls for heat, out once the setting is reached, then on and off as it holds temperature.
A lamp that never goes out is a thermostat still waiting. The usual reasons: a glow-bar igniter too weak to open the gas valve fully, a door seal leaking heat, or a sensor reading low.

Stop and call if
- The igniter glows but no flame ever appears.
- A gas smell stays after the burner is off: leave, then call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
- The breaker trips while the oven heats.

Can a weak igniter keep the preheat light on?
Yes, on glow-bar gas ovens. Viking's gas range service manual says the igniter circuit must reach about 3.2 to 3.6 amps before the oven valve opens fully; below 3.2 the valve only partly opens, so the oven heats slowly and the lamp stays lit.
Should I keep baking while the light stays on?
