Door Won't Seal: Heat at the Knobs

Check, in this order

Oven off and cold: shut the door on a slip of paper at several points around the frame.

Look along the gasket for tears, flat spots or sections out of place.

Where the heat goes
When the door does not close tight, hot air rolls out of the top edge and rises into the knobs and handle, and the preheat light stays on longer than it should.
Not all warmth there is a leak: Viking’s VSOE and VDOE wall ovens vent at the front into the room, and the RVSOE330 guide warns the vent area gets hot enough to burn.
A dropped door leaks the same way. On Viking’s free-standing gas ranges the gasket only comes out with the door off, and the VGSC306 manual warns that an unlevel range misaligns the door.
Stop and call if
- The knobs or handle get too hot to hold during an ordinary bake.
- The door drops open on its own or will not stay closed.
- The gasket is torn, hardened or hanging loose from the frame.
- Scorch marks or discoloration appear on the panel above the door.

Can I clean or push back a Viking oven door gasket myself?
Viking's use-and-care guides say not to clean the door gasket at all, and to avoid rubbing, damaging or moving it, because it is what makes the seal. Wash the door only up to the gasket's edge. A gasket that has slipped or torn is a parts job.
