Can you use an oven with a dropped door?

Check, in this order

  1. With the oven cold, shut the door and compare the gap at its two top corners.

    pass even and tight: the door sits square fail one corner high or gaping: note which side

  2. Close the door on a strip of paper at each top corner, then pull it.

    pass it drags: the seal is touching there fail it slides out freely: that corner is leaking heat

  3. Run a finger along the door seal round the opening: is any length flattened, torn or missing?

    pass intact: the door's position is the problem, not the seal fail damaged: mention it when you book

Heat escapes along the top edge of the door and rises across the control panel, so the knobs and the range front run hotter than they should. Inside, the oven loses heat as it makes it: a slow preheat, or a preheat light that never goes out.

Viking’s service manual for its free-standing gas ranges shows a spring in each door hinge and an adjustment screw on the door itself. Setting either is bench work, and so is taking the door off.

A self-clean runs far hotter than any bake, and its lock needs a door that closes square.

Stop and call if

  • The knobs or control panel get hot to the touch during a bake.
  • The door drops open on its own, or hangs visibly lower on one side.
  • The glass is cracked, or the door will not stay shut.
